High school student posts ‘slaves for sale’ Craigslist ad

A Florida high school student has been suspended after taking a picture of two black female students and posting that picture on Craiglist for an ad reading: “Two slaves for sale – $470.”

The students attended Fleming Island High School, but the ad was geographically tagged to a nearby neighborhood called Fleming Island Plantation.

The caption on the since-removed ad read: “Two healthy negro slavegals for sale. Good Condition and hard work ethic! If you need another pair of hands around the farm/house, you’re in luck!”

The student who posted the ad, who is a senior at the school, has been suspended for 10 days and will be sent to an alternative school, according to First Coast News.

“We do not tolerate this type of behavior, and we are disheartened that any of our students would be subject to discrimination,” Superintendent Addison Davis said in a statement to WPLG Local 10 in Florida. “Fleming Island High School administration and district leadership are working together to create a school-wide plan of action to strengthen the climate and culture while celebrating the school’s diversity.”
