Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

During this year’s MTV Movie Awards, Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome of Moonlight took home the award for “Best Kiss.”

Moonlight beat out the other nominees, including La La Land, Beauty and the Beast, and Empire.

Sanders, in accepting the award, dedicated it to “the misfits,” saying, “I think it’s safe to say that it is okay for young performers, especially us minority performers, to step out of the box. This award is for that. It’s for artists who need to step out of the box and do whatever it takes to tell a story and whatever it takes to make a change, to get people to wake up.”

“This award is bigger than Jharrel and I, this represents more than a kiss. This is for those who feel like ‘the others’, ‘the misfits’,” he added.

Barry Jenkins also tweeted his support, writing, “Hey now!!! Much love to @AshDSanders and @JharrelJerome holdin us down at the #MTVAwards!!! Could not be prouder of these two.”

Of course, once two black gay characters won the “Best Kiss” award, the Internet exploded in celebration. Congratulations to Moonlight and especially to Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome for the amazing work!
