Film highlights Rihanna’s journey as math teacher in Malawi

Rihanna’s charity, the Clara Lionel Foundation, has teamed up with the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen to give an education to the poorest children in the world, and recently, a mini-documentary was released showing her teaching math to children in Malawi.

The country is facing budget challenges that harm their ability to help children learn, but Rihanna is enchanted by the way these children are able to pick up on math concepts through music and rhythm.

“I love that they learn in melody,” said Rihanna. “They adopt melody really, really quickly. And so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that’s the most brilliant, brilliant thing.”

Watching the documentary, it’s easy to see why she was given Harvard University’s Humanitarian of the Year award earlier this year.

“People make it seem way too hard, man,” she said when she accepted the award. “You don’t have to be rich to be a humanitarian.”
