Report: White House demanded GOP defend Trump on TV after Comey hearing

After former FBI director James Comey's Senate Intelligence Committee testimony, the White House reportedly asked Republicans to defend Trump on cable news.

On Thursday, former FBI Director James Comey appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the former director’s testimony was bad enough for the president of the United States that the White House was reportedly demanding that Republican politicians get out on cable news and defend Trump.

The Daily Caller, a conservative news website, reported that the administration approached Republicans about going on Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNN, because Trump was “obsessing and watching every channel.”

What’s more, the inner circle of the administration felt that Republicans “were not doing enough to push back against” the claims of obstruction of justice that are being leveled against Trump, claims that are behind a current campaign to level impeachment charges against him.

Comey’s testimony was a serious blow against the president as he described meetings with Trump and actions that he called “disturbing.” He testified that he had written down the details of every interaction with Trump because he was concerned that the president would “lie” about the meetings and conversations.

He also slammed the president for firing him, saying that the “shifting explanation” for why he was fired “confused me and increasingly concerned me,” and going on to call out the president for defamation as Trump went on to smear Comey as well as the FBI after firing the veteran chief.

While Comey did not say whether he felt that Trump’s actions came out to obstruction of justice, he did say that if that was the case, he was “sure” that Special Counsel Robert Mueller will investigate.
