A Queens man is suing Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, claiming that Mauldin attacked him inside a club after he accidentally spilled champagne on him, reports the New York Post.
Jean Lopez, the man filing suit against Mauldin, claimed that he spilled the champagne inside the Highline Ballroom, at which point Mauldin attacked him, leaving him with a black eye and severe swelling on one side of his face.
According to his lawyer, Lopez suffered “multiple maxillofacial fractures” and needed “numerous plates” in order to address the damage.
“He had surgery, he still has numbness on the affected side in his mouth area and traveling up to his ear. It’s a bad injury,” the lawyer, Glenn Race, said.
After the incident, Lopez filed a complaint, but no charges were filed after Lopez could not identify his assailant. Now, he is filing suit instead, bringing charges against Mauldin and Reginald Cook, who he claimed “acted in concert” with Maudlin by “pushing, grabbing and/or restraining” Lopez.
As for Mauldin, he has not commented, but his lawyer, Mitchell Schuster, said that the claims were “without merit,” adding, “Another individual struck the plaintiff. And that will be borne out by the witnesses and other parties involved.”
A spokesperson for the Jets also commented on the matter, saying, “The Jets are aware of the situation but have no further comment at this time.”
