Whoopi Goldberg says media coverage of Trump was ’98 percent’ positive

On "The View," Whoopi Goldberg claimed that the early media coverage of then-candidate Trump was overwhelmingly positive.

On Tuesday morning, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich appeared on The View, where he bemoaned the negative press that has plagued President Donald Trump. However, Whoopi Goldberg disagreed with his assessment, claiming that the early media coverage of then-candidate Trump was overwhelmingly positive.

The conversation started when Jedediah Bila asked Gingrich, “Are people frustrated with him, are they disappointed with him? What are they feeling out there?”

Gingrich said that there was an “endless barrage” of negative press against the president, so he expressed his surprise that Trump was able to get any public support.

“I think it’s amazing, if you look at the — for example, CNN’s 93 percent negative coverage according to Harvard, 93 percent negative, I think it’s a miracle that Trump has any approval,” Gingrich said.

But Goldberg pointed Gingrich back to the beginning of Trump’s campaign, saying, “So, do you mean, because I recall – and maybe I’m crazy – but I recall from the time the gentleman came down the escalator until the time he won, he was 24/7 on every television on every network forcing– making one of the head of the networks saying, ‘Yeah, it wasn’t good for America but it was great for us.’ It was all positive until people started asking questions.”

When Gingrich argued that “It was all noisy but it wasn’t all positive,” Goldberg insisted, “No, no. 98 percent of it was positive, Newt.”

While there’s no doubt that when Trump first announced his candidacy, and many people still thought it was a publicity stunt, he had more positive press coverage, we still think 98 percent is too high a claim.
