Halle Berry says social media can be a ‘brand killer’ for celebs

The actress had critical words for social media while promoting her website, Hallewood, at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Halle Berry is relaunching her site, Hallewood, as a lifestyle website. The Oscar-winning actress announced the relaunch at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on Tuesday.

“In the year 2000, I had the idea of creating a fan website,” she said. “I knew back then, almost 18 years ago, that the future for artists like myself was to find ways we could connect one-on-one with our fans. To have a real conversation for them to get to know me in a different way than the media was presenting me.”

Berry explained that she wanted to have a website as a way to interact with fans as an alternative to social media.

“Social media is empowering in many ways, but the part that is concerning for me, especially with my personal brand, is that that power can be misused,” she said.

She also noted that posting pictures on social media could add fuel to the fires of rumors that she was dating around, among other things. “It can be a brand killer,” she said.

“People actually have the power to affect your brand in this day and age, and I have little control over it, and that’s the frustrating part,” she continued before explaining that the website would be a way for her to be able to control her brand and message while still giving fans the chance to interact “face-to-face” with her.
