JAY-Z’s ‘4:44’ goes platinum in less than a week

It’s only been five days, but already, JAY-Z‘s 4:44 has gone platinum.
The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which means that the album has streamed or sold the equivalent of one million copies.
4:44, which is JAY-Z’s seventeenth album total and his thirteenth solo album, was originally released only through Tidal to pre-existing subscribers and to Sprint customers on Friday, but earlier this week, it was released to all Tidal subscribers, and a physical release is expected soon.

JAY-Z’s last LP, Magna Carta Holy Grail, which was released in 2013, went platinum the same day that it was released. The RIAA had just changed the rules prior to the album’s release stating that digital sales would go toward an album’s status, while previously, an album had to be out for 30 days before those sales would count.
This combined with the fact that JAY-Z had a deal with Samsung offering the first one million copies of the album free to its customers meant that Magna Carta was able to go platinum the very same day that it was released.
