In November, Keith Crowell took his story to the local news, hoping for a miracle, and the members of his community came out to support him just like he’d hoped.

Crowell suffered from debilitating keloids on his face after a barber nicked him thirteen years ago. The cut never healed and instead only became worse as at one point, nearly 40 pounds of flesh was hanging off of his face.

However, his insurance company would not cover the treatment that he needed to get the keloids removed.

But people who had seen Crowell’s story wanted to help, so they managed to get together $25,000 in a GoFundMe.com account in order to pay for the keloids’ removal.

In May, Crowell was able to go to a plastic surgeon to remove the keloids, and he will headed back to New York to see the same surgeon for a followup just recently, finally ending a years-long struggle.

“I feel a lot lighter. It’s a lot of weight off my shoulders. I’m energetic. I feel more of myself. I feel more alive,” Crowell said.

He added that he is now less insecure because of the surgery and has more fun at his job as a casino security guard. “I just feel good about it. I’m more comical. I meet and greet the customers a little more. I’m more of a people person than I was before,” he explained.

And to those strangers who helped him to escape his medical nightmare, he said, “Thank you. Thank you for your support and thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve done for me.”
