Arizona man stranded in desert for days survived on beer, urine

An Arizona man who was stranded for days in the desert claimed to have survived on beer, crackers, a single spoiled sandwich, and his own urine.

On July 27, Mick Ohman was on his way back to Phoenix after a trip to Crown King when his SUV broke down. However, there was no cell phone reception, and he walked through the desert for hours with no way to contact anyone.

At one point, he even recorded a video on his cell phone in case things took a turn that he couldn’t come back from.

“If you find this phone and I didn’t do so well, please tell my sisters how much I love them,” he said in the video.

He told KNXV-TV that he only had a half-bottle of water, beer, a sandwich that had gone bad and crackers in his car in terms of food and water to keep him going. Eventually, he got so thirsty that, as he told the station, “I’ve really never felt that thirsty before. When I tried to swallow I couldn’t. My throat stuck together.”

That was when he turned to drinking his own urine, he said.

“I had to urinate and I did. I was surprised it wasn’t as obnoxious as I thought it would be. The temperature was what got me, as warm as it was,” Ohman said.

On the second day, he found a stream, but he became sick after drinking from it.

It was not until the third day that dirt biker Troy Haverland appeared to save him.

“I’m screaming in his ear the whole way, ‘You know, today you can say you saved a life,’” Ohman said.

Haverland drove Ohman to Lake Pleasant, where he met with Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies and refused treatment after being examined by a medical team.
