During a discussion of race on Monday’s New Day on CNN, things got a little heated when the former attorney general for Virginia told former Bernie Sanders press secretary Symone Sanders to “shut up.”

The topic of discussion was the violence over the weekend in Virginia in which protesters who were countering a white nationalist rally were attacked by one of the white nationalists, who drove a car into the group of protesters, injuring around 20 people and killing one.

“Can I finish, Simone?” Ken Cuccinelli said during the heated exchange. “Will you just shut up for a minute?”

“You don’t get to tell me to shut up on national television!” Sanders said. “I’m sorry. Under no circumstances do you get to speak to me in that matter. You should exhibit some decorum.”

Chris Cuomo stepped in to demand that Cuccinelli apologize, saying, “We don’t tell people to shut up on this show. You can stand up for yourself and still be civil.”

But Cuccinelli wouldn’t apologize, saying instead, “How do I keep talking when people keep interrupting me?”

Eventually, later on in the segment, Cuccinelli offered a sort of apology: “I’ll apologize for telling her to shut up, and I’ll accept her apology for interrupting me.”

“I don’t have an apology for you. You will not get one,” Sanders shot back.
