A statue of Christopher Columbus standing in a Yonkers park has reportedly lost its head.
Pat Gamberdella, who has lived in the area all his life, called police when he saw the damage to the statue.
“It’s very upsetting that American values have sunken to the level they are today,” Gamberdella said. “It’s unfortunate because I did go up there and I did see it all smashed.”
The head was found in Columbus Memorial Park, a mile north of the Bronx, next to a plastic bag.
Yonkers police believe it might have been the work of juveniles, but they are not ruling out the idea that it could be related to recent protests that have cropped up since Charlottesville calling for the removal of Confederate monuments and other monuments to oppressors.
“We can’t just desecrate a monument to them just because you don’t like what they did,” Gamberdella said.
