Recently, Janet Mock’s interview with Kim Kardashian West for the cover issue of Interview magazine has been drawing controversy for its comparison of Kardashian to Jackie Kennedy, the former First Lady of the United States.

“Kim Kardashian West channels another mother whose every move captivated the American imagination: First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis,” the magazine wrote.

However, the internet wasn’t having it and dragged the article all over the place, prompting Mock to respond and to distance herself from the story.

“FYI: I did not choose the portraits/art, headline or write the intro. I led the conversation w/ KKW, in @InterviewMag’s signature style,” Mock wrote.

— Tracee Ellis Ross almost passed on ‘Black-ish’ because of Anthony Anderson, thought he was an ‘a**hole’ —

“KKW & I spoke in July on the phone; I was interested in how she navigated controversy/business & surrounded her black children w/ images,” she said, adding that she was “proud” of the conversation that she had with Kardashian.

“I love popular culture, & my work as a journalist has always used the conversation as a means of exchange,” she said.

She also apologized for the part of the interview in which she told Kardashian, “You’ve challenged standards of beauty to make it a bit browner, a bit bronzer, a bit curvier. I wonder how conscious you are of raising a mixed black girl in the world?”

“I was comparing KKW to her reality predecessors (Paris H/J Simpson: thin blonde pale white women), Mock tweeted in explanation. “I should NOT have said BROWNER but BRONZER.”
