A Chicago community activist said on Thursday that hotel surveillance footage shows Kenneka Jenkins entering a walk-in freezer in a Chicago hotel alone.

Andrew Holmes, an anti-violence activist, said that he spoke to Rosemont detectives in an attempt to find answers for the family of the young woman who died in the freezer, and they showed him the surveillance video on Wednesday.

According to Holmes, the surveillance video shows Jenkins waiting in the lobby of the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel for her friends, who had gone upstairs to retrieve some of their possessions. Jenkins then enters an elevator, which she rides to a lower level, and then wanders around the hotel in a disoriented manner.

He said that Jenkins eventually wound up in the kitchen, where she opened the door to the freezer and wandered in, at which point she was not seen again.

“It was just an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

Holmes said that claims that Jenkins was murdered were “just something they made up on social media.”

Police have said that they offered to show Jenkins’ mother, Tereasa Martin, the video before releasing it to the public. Martin said that she had not seen it yet but planned to review it with her lawyer.
