Details are still coming in about the ambush that claimed the lives of four United States servicemen in Niger.
Sgt. La David Johnson, Staff Sgt. Bryan Black, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson and Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright all lost their lives after a 12-man Green Beret team was attacked as they left a meeting with local leaders. The ambush led to a firefight until French Mirage jets arrived.
However, soon after the firefight had ended, US, French, and Nigerien troops realized that Johnson was missing, and they searched for him for around 48 hours before finding his body.

The attack has since been attributed to an ISIS group in the Greater Sahara.
Johnson’s body was returned to Dover Air Force Base on Oct. 7. He left behind a grieving young widow who is pregnant with their third child together as well as their other two children, a 6-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy.
Since Johnson’s death, a GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the family, specifically for a Role Model Army Sgt. La David T. Johnson Scholarship that will help to pay for the education of their three children. In just two days, the page has already raised over half a million dollars, though its ultimate goal is $1 million.
