GOP lawmaker wants people with HIV ‘legally’ quarantined

Georgia Rep. Betty Price, the Republican wife of the former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, has asked if it would be possible to quarantine people with HIV.

Price herself is a physician and suggested the practice during a study committee. She asked if such a thing would be possible and legal. At the time of her comments, the group was discussing the rise in HIV cases in the area and the various treatment levels those with HIV have access to.

She said they didn’t “want to say the quarantine word,” right before she said it and was genuinely wondering about the legality of such a thing.

“Is there an ability, since I would guess that public dollars are expended heavily in prophylaxis and treatment of this condition?” she asked her colleagues. “So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread. What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”

Betty Price’s husband, Tom, was part of President Trump’s cabinet. He resigned at the end of September after being widely criticized for using private planes on the taxpayer’s dime.
