Student under fire for blackface ‘will stand for money’ Kaepernick costume

A South Dakota man has come under fire for a Halloween costume depicting Colin Kaepernick.

Cole Paulson posted a picture of his costume online, showing off the full getup: an afro wig, blackface, and a sign that reads “will stand for money.” In the picture, Paulson is seen kneeling, in mockery of Kaepernick’s #TakeAKnee protests.

Paulson was immediately hit with a wave of backlash as social media users blasted his racist costume, though before making his Twitter account private, he posted that his “intentions were not racist whatsoever” and that he was “ignorant” of what blackface meant.

“I was ignorant to the fact I was being racist and did not know the implications as to what I was doing. I had zero racist intentions and I deeply apologize to anyone I offended,” he said in a statement to ABC News affiliate station KSFY. “I’ve received dozens of threats on my physical wellbeing in the last 24 hours many threatening to take my life so I’d prefer to not have any more exposure. I meant no harm and all I have gotten is pure hatred towards me today when in reality I was not trying to show any hate last night.”

South Dakota State University has since said that while Paulson has listed himself as a student, he is not currently enrolled there. However, they have reached out to have a “dialogue” with him.
