No white men nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ Grammy for first time in 20 years

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

For the first time in almost 20 years, the Grammys have not nominated any white men in the Album of the Year category.

The nominees for that category include Childish Gambino, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Lorde, meaning all of the nominees are women or people of color.

What’s more, all of the artists in the Record of the Year are people of color, with the exception of Justin Bieber, who collaborated with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee on “Despacito.”

There are some caveats to the lack of any white men in the Album of the Year category, seeing as album co-producer Jack Antonoff could also win if Lorde does, or if Childish Gambino wins, Swedish composer and producer Ludwig Göransson does too.

But for the performers themselves, this is the first time that there have been no white men nominated. In 1999, Lauryn Hill won Album of the Year for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill over Garbage, Madonna, Shania Twain, and Sheryl Crow. The group Garbage, fronted by Shirley Manson, did have white men in its ranks, however.

Despite the caveats, this is a big deal for the Grammys, which have long been criticized for lagging behind the country in the diversity department. Hopefully, the trend of diversifying will continue.
