85-year-old war vet kills home intruder with one shot

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Don Lutz, an 85-year-old Korean War vet from Pennsylvania, woke up in the wee hours of the morning on Friday to home intruders. He successfully fought off one after shooting the other and killing the intruder with one shot.

Lutz, who sleeps with his gun under his pillow, said that he was prepared to handle himself from his time on the front lines.

“What’s the point of having a gun if it’s not loaded?” he said.

Lutz told WPXI that when he woke up during the home intrusion, one of the intruders grabbed him, so he shot the intruder point blank, in the chest.

“I just fired one. It was in the dark. He attacked me and he was up close and I shot him,” he said.

The intruder rolled off of Lutz and died, and the other intruder ran away.

Lutz said that he wasn’t injured but that he was “a little sore from scuffling with them” after they “jumped him” and he fought back until they “went on the floor.”

Lt. David Kingston of the Ellwood City police confirmed that Lutz would not be charged with a crime, because “he was defending himself.” The police have not yet identified either of the suspects.
