Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

The handgun used to kill Tupac Shakur turned up in a Compton backyard almost two decades ago. But somehow, between then and now, law enforcement seems to have lost track of it.

The producers of the A&E docu-series Who Killed Tupac? managed to unearth a document explaining how the murder weapon was found in 1998.

Apparently, someone in Compton found the .40 caliber Glock in his backyard and called the police. The Compton police then booked the gun as found property. That was on May 30, 1998.

Then, in 2000, the Glock transferred to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department when the LASD took over the policing of Compton. The Glock, as part of 3,800 confiscated firearms, ended up under their responsibility.

In 2006, Deputy T. Brennan noticed something in the records that stuck out to him.

Brennan had worked on the Notorious B.I.G. murder and noticed that the address on the records for the Glock matched up with a girlfriend of a prominent Crip member. Since he knew that the Crip member had issues with Tupac, Brennan decided to run ballistics on the gun.

And it turned out to be a match for the gun that killed Tupac.

However, instead of turning the gun over to Vegas, a federal prosecutor recommended that the gun should not be given to the LVPD.

It’s possible that the prosecutor was afraid that new gang violence would break out if the news broke that a member of the Crips was responsible for the murder of Tupac.

Where is it now?

So, while the gun was never turned over to the Las Vegas Police Department, the question remains: what happened to the Glock? A&E claimed that the LVPD confirmed that they never received the gun, but it seems no one in law enforcement is willing to say where it ultimately ended up.

The news reportedly stunned Tupac’s brother when A&E told him what they knew.

In the meantime, A&E is airing the final episode of Who Killed Tupac on Tuesday night?
