Actresses attending the 2018 Golden Globes will reportedly wear black to protest sexual harassment, according to People magazine.
In the wake of the #MeToo movement and the wave of sexual misconduct allegations that have rocked Hollywood as well as other industries, several women in the industry feel it is the perfect moment to take a stand.
“All female actresses attending the Globes are protesting by just wearing black gowns,” People reported.
The women participating include not only presenters but also nominees and others. Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep and Emma Stone are among those rumored to be participating in the protest.
Since the Golden Globes are the first award show of the year, it may be the case that the actresses continue their protests throughout the awards season. If that’s the case, be prepared to see black dresses all the way through March and the Oscars.
Rocked by scandal
This awards season will be like no other. With so many big names in disgrace over sexual misconduct allegations, the entertainment industry has been rocked to its core.
The biggest example is by far Harvey Weinstein, who was one of the most powerful names in Hollywood before multiple women came forward to accuse him of sexual harassment and assault. Since then, he has been removed from Bafta, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Directors Guild of America.
Other disgraced stars include Brett Ratner, Louis CK, Geoffrey Rush Jeffrey Tambor and Russell Simmons. And the accusations and scandal is only growing.
The Golden Globes are happening in the middle of a huge cultural moment. Worldwide, women everywhere came forward with their stories of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. Millions came forward to say #MeToo.
Now, those men who for so long got away with their abhorrent behavior are getting their comeuppance.
Women aren’t going to take it anymore and this protest is just part of that growing trend.
