Essence is set to honor Missy Elliot at their 2018 Black Women in Music celebration.

Essence explained the choice of Elliot as their honoree, saying Elliot was “a consummate visionary whose creativity knows no limits.”  The site also says the music legend “has continuously pushed the boundaries in her work to shift the culture for the better across multiple industries including music, dance, fashion, film, television and art.”

Essence began the award in order to recognize the important contributions of Black women in the music industry during Grammys week. After all, as we’ve seen, it’s not always the case that Black women get the credit they deserve.
