Nicki Minaj blasted as ‘racist’ for calling out whitewashing of hip-hop

"It's a great time to be a white rapper in America huh?"

"It's a great time to be a white rapper in America huh?"

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Nicki Minaj was slammed online after she called out the fact that so many white artists are dominating the hip-hop scene.

The controversy stemmed from a screenshot Minaj posted of the iTunes top ten list in hip-hop. The list in question included the likes of Eminem and Post Malone, pointing to an obvious lack of color.

“It’s a great time to be a white rapper in America huh?” Minaj wrote on the post.

Accusations of racism

The rapper’s post didn’t sit well with some people. Many accused Minaj of racism or exclusion, arguing that it wasn’t right for her to say only Black people were allowed in hip-hop.

“So only because you are black you can be rapper?? This is so RACIST from Nicki Minaj. Nicki you are ‘sometimes’ huge idiot,” one Twitter user wrote.

“@NICKIMINAJ don’t like to be called a female rapper but she made a reference about white rappers,” wrote another.

Minaj claps back

After the internet came after her for her supposed “racism,” Minaj clapped back.

The Queens native shared a video of J Cole saying more or less the same thing about hip-hop seeing a racial shift. And on top of the video, she posted a wordy message about expressing her opinion.

“Whenever a black woman speaks on ANYTHING she’s labelled ‘mad’, ‘angry’ and ‘bitter’,” she wrote.

She then added, “I’m blessed and highly favoured, thanks to my amazing fans. But I’ll speak on whatever the f**k I want to, whenever the f**k I want to. I love being a smart, successful woman. It’s never been cool or funny to be illiterate or uninterested in your own industry and how it works.”

Both of the posts have since been taken down, but their messages were still preserved in screenshots.
