NYPD cop busted for sending sexually inappropriate texts to teen

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

The NYPD disciplined one of its cops for sending sexually inappropriate texts to a 16-year-old girl.

Authorities said on Monday that Andre Patnett, who also coached girls volleyball, will keep his shield for now. Instead of going to trial, he accepted a penalty, though details on what the punishment was were not made available.

The department cited a state law preventing the release of an officer’s disciplinary record to explain why more details were not available.

However, Police Commissioner James O’Neill could still decide to fire Patnett, according to a source close to the matter.

Coach Patnett

Patnett coached a girls volleyball team as part of the “Cops and Kids” program of the Police Athletic League. However, he reportedly got in hot water over his unauthorized outside employment.

It is not immediately clear if Patnett met the teen to whom he sent explicit texts through the volleyball team or if he met her elsewhere. It is also unclear whether Patnett still coaches for the league.

In June 2016, Patnett posed in uniform for a picture while holding a trophy. That picture made it to PAL’s Facebook page.

“Congratulations to the Undefeated 42 Precinct in winning The PAL Cops & Kids Volleyball Championship!” the Facebook post read. “Congrats to Coach Officer Andre Patnett, former Collegiate Volleyball Player from the 42 Precinct.”
