Logan Browning of Netflix’s Dear White People announced on Instagram this week that the cast and crew have established a Jordan Edwards scholarship fund.

Jordan, just 15-years-old was shot and killed while leaving a party by former Texas police officer Roy Oliver. The teen was in the passenger seat of his brother’s car and was hit in the head by a bullet fired from the then-officer’s rifle.

It tragic incident happened the weekend of the Dear White People premiere and the whole team behind the show wanted to do something in honor of Jordan Edwards. They established the Jordan J. Edwards Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Alabama.

They set up the fund in Alabama because “Jordan dreamed of attending the University of Alabama and playing football for the Crimson Tide. His ambition was to earn his degree and become a pilot.”

Those in charge of the scholarship will be seeking out a student athlete who is not only good at sports but who like Jordan, is “an excellent student.” The founders hope that the kids that are awarded the Jordan Edwards scholarship will “become what time and events did not allow to Jordan.”

Browning said that she hopes that through the fund Jordan Edwards’ “dream will live on through another deserving student, and #JordanEdwards will live on as more than just a hashtag.”

Here’s why Meghan Markle will never become ‘Princess Meghan’ —

Roy Oliver, the fired Balch Springs police officer who shot and killed the 15-year-old was indicted by a grand jury for murder.

On April 29, Oliver fired into a car containing Edwards and his friends, including his brother, when the car was leaving a party. Originally, Police Chief Jonathan Haber claimed that the vehicle was reversing toward Oliver in a menacing manner, but that account was later corrected to state that the car was moving forward instead.

In addition to the murder indictment, Oliver was indicted for four counts of aggravated assault for each of the teens in the car with Jordan. No date has yet been set for the trial against him.
