An Alabama teacher was placed on leave on Monday after using a racial slur in her classroom.

Hoover school superintendent Dr. Kathy Murphy confirmed that the teacher, Teddie Butcher, admitted to using the racial slur in her classroom on Friday.

According to Shenita Morrow, a Black mother whose daughter is a senior at the high school and is in Butcher’s class, Butcher often allowed her students to listen to music during class. Morrow’s daughter was playing “Dear Mama” by Tupac Shakur while she worked on a class project when Butcher walked in and responded by using the racial slur.

“Turn the n****r tunes off,” Butcher said.

“It’s just baffling to me”

Morrow and her daughter met with Butcher as well as an assistant principal at Hoover High on Monday afternoon to discuss the incident. During that meeting, according to Morrow, Butcher claimed that the song had foul language. However, Morrow said that she had reviewed the song and didn’t find any such language.

Morrow’s daughter also had the chance to address the teacher directly and explain how shocked she was by her teacher’s casual use of the racial slur in front of her.

“After meeting with [Butcher], it’s just baffling to me how someone does not understand the severity of the weight of that word,” Morrow said, according to AL.com.

To that end, Morrow said that she knew Butcher had been referring to the song when she used the slur, but the problem was the “comfort level” Butcher felt in using the word in the first place.

Butcher has been placed on leave and apologized to her students on Monday.

“As we are addressing this matter, we will be looking at our board’s policy and obviously taking a look at the state Teacher Code about expectations and we’ll be putting her conduct and behavior up against what we know is professional conduct of one’s self,” Murphy said of the matter.
