As the country continues to dissect Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address, we have to talk about how the first lady looked uncomfortable AF – patiently waiting for it to end and exit stage left.
As allegations swirl about Trump’s alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, and the alleged payout she received to keep it a secret, Melania has been noticeably absent.
But last night was brutal for her. From awkward blank stares to her interesting choice of style, here are the five signs we’re almost sure Melania wished she was somewhere, anywhere else, but the SOTU.

Not riding in POTUS motorcade

Breaking with tradition, Melania decided to arrive to the SOTU separately from her husband. And by separately we mean different cars and different times. The first lady opted to arrive a bit earlier, which is code for keep that moron as far away from me as possible. White House staff not so cleverly spun the obvious shade by explaining that she instead wanted to spend more time with her guests, who had been invited to sit in the first lady’s box. But we peep game, Melania.
We see your impeccable shade and we raise you a palm tree.
The painfully awkward and long hand clap

If there’s one thing we know about SOTU addresses, it’s that long rounds of clapping is an annoying tradition. But watching a stone cold faced Melania clapping during Trump’s entrance was painfully awkward. While she’s usually good at keeping a straight poker face, everything about her read “why am I here?” It must suck having to keep up with the political charades, but cracking a smile wouldn’t have hurt.
Wearing all white

Say what you want, but Melania always gives you stunning fashions. Tuesday was no different. The former model turned heads in an all-white Christian Dior capri-pant suit. Call us conspiracists, but something says Melania’s decision to wear white is symbolic of a deeper meaning.
Some speculated that it was a nod to the women’s suffrage movement (lord knows she’s suffered enough in her marriage). Was she trying to give us a sign for distress on the low? It’s also worth noting that Hillary Clinton wore an all-white pantsuit to Trump’s inauguration. Was Melania giving Hill a sartorial smoke signal for the former FLOTUS to give her a call?
Looking bored AF

Though she didn’t have any family seated next her (her son Barron was noticeably absent), Melania did have the company of her special guests. In fact, the only time she seemed to crack a smile was when interacting with the guests, which included a 12-year-old boy who helped place American flags on the graves of veterans; and an officer who, along with his wife, adopted a child of an opioid addict.
Was it us, or did Melania seem more enthused with her guests than she did while listening to her own husband’s speech? And by enthused we mean by Melania standards. To be clear, we know she wasn’t really checking for them. Aside from a gesture here and there, nothing about Melania’s body language overall was inviting, and it certainly didn’t look like she wanted to be there. We’re guessing she was planning her exit and next flight out of DC.
Giving the side eye

Despite a lovely shout out from her doting husband, Melania didn’t look impressed during his SOTU greeting. Like at all. In fact, we definitely caught a side eye or two throughout the night. Forever first lady Michelle Obama would have been giving her man adoring stares and schoolgirl crush-like blushes for days–because that’s what you do when you’re happy and in love. When you’re married to Trump, however, that’s another story.
