Woman charged for yelling racial slurs and breaking car windows of interracial couple

After weeks of public outrage, a Texas woman was finally indicted on charges of felony mischief for a racist attack in which she yelled slurs at an interracial couple and broke their car windows.

Jason and Victoria Chapa, who are Mexican-American and African-American respectively, went to see a new home in last December near Marion, Texas.

But when the couple began to tour the home, they suddenly heard the sound of glass breaking. And when the the Chapas returned to their car they found 29-year-old Melissa Shelton.

Shelton had smashed their front windshield and the back driver’s side window leaving shattered glass on a child’s car seat. Thankfully the the Chapas’ chid was not in the car at the time of the incident.

When the Chapas saw the scene, Shelton reportedly then began to yell at them, screaming racial slurs. She said that they were too poor to move into her neighborhood and called them “ni****s” and “spics.”

The police did nothing

According to The Root, the Chapas called 911, but when deputies arrived, Shelton lied began to lie to cover up the racist attack. She and Mason Mycue, her companion, told police that the Chapas had accused them of vandalism shortly after they arrived at home.

The Chapas claim that Mycue had reportedly offered to pay for the windows.

The Marion Police Department didn’t even cite Shelton for damaging the couple’s car at the time of the racist attack so the Chapas were forced to secure a lawyer.

“The local police, of course, did nothing. The neighborhood housing association, the local realtors, all offered nothing but a silent endorsement of the attack,” attorney S. Lee Merritt, who represents the Chapas, wrote in a Facebook post after the vandalism. “This was not Black History Month. This is not black history. This didn’t happen 50 years ago. It happened a few weeks ago. This is America 2018.”

The Marion Police Department eventually they turned over their police report of the incident to the Guadalupe County District Attorney’s Office due to public pressure.

On Thursday, a grand jury finally indicted Shelton on charges of felony mischief for the racist attack.
