New Orleans: 21 people become victims of gun violence in one week

As the country mourns the victims of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the reality of gun violence in urban communities continues. In New Orleans last week, 21 people were shot with eight people losing their lives.

Here is the roundup of last week’s bloodshed, per Nola.com:

On Sunday, February 11, a 33-year-old was shot by an unidentified assailant when getting out of a car. He is in critical condition.

On Tuesday, two teenagers were shot near a Mardis Gras parade route. One was in stable condition after being hit in the leg; the other was in critical condition after being hit in the head.

That same day, Maurice Williams was shot along the parade route when, according to NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison, a fight broke out and shots were fired. Williams was taken to the hospital but died of his injuries. The shooter, 21-year-old Eddie Dingle, said that he was acting in self-defense after being hit in the head with a pipe wrench.

Also on Tuesday, a 55-year-old Michigan man was shot in the leg after someone reportedly shot him through the door of his car.

That night, five people were shot and two were killed. All five were in a car that was found with shattered windows and over a dozen bullet holes.

Alex Moore, 46, was arrested on Tuesday after an argument about food at a party led Moore to grab a gun. He injured himself as well as his romantic partner, who was shot in the arm.

On Wednesday morning, Vinson Hayes was found in the driveway of a corner store after being shot. He became the fourth person to be fatally shot in a 24-hour period.

Then, on Thursday, a man was found with a gunshot to the head about a block from where a fatal shooting had taken place less than 24 hours previously.

That night, a gunman boarded a bus and threatened the 51-year-old driver, ultimately shooting the driver in the arm. The gunman also reportedly “threatened to kill” a woman and her husband and child in a Lower 9th Ward home, according to a news release issued Friday morning by the New Orleans Police Department.

On Friday night, Alexis Banks, 19, was killed in a double shooting that also left a relative injured, according to her family.

On Saturday, two people were killed in a double shooting. One was later identified as 50-year-old Ronald Hawkins. That same afternoon, a 26-year-old man was shot in the Warehouse District and was brought to the hospital.

Finally, early on Sunday, police responded to shots fired in a large fight, where a 21-year-old was shot dead with a wound to his chest and stomach.
