The 7 Blackest moments from the Academy Awards that kept us from falling asleep
We still represented.
Only a couple Black folks walked home with a statue from this year's Academy Awards ceremony (Congrats Jordan and Kobe!), but as our people are wont to do, we still showed up and showed out.
Only a couple Black folks walked home with a statue from this year’s 90th Academy Awards ceremony (Congrats Jordan and Kobe!), but as our people are wont to do, we still showed up and showed out.
Here are 7 of the Blackest moments from Hollywood’s big night:
Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph Hamming It Up
There’s nothing like taking off your uncomfortable (but so cute) high-heeled shoes after a long night of partying with your girls. For Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph, that moment happened live on television while the Oscars were still taking place. The two funny ladies gabbed about the abundance of white folks and the pain of blistered feet in front of a receptive audience.
Wakandan Pow Wow
What are Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o whispering to Daniel Kaluuya? Perhaps it’s a warning that there better not be even one decorated war-rhino anywhere near the red carpet. The chemistry between the Black Panther cast is heart-warming. In interviews and social media posts, they are constantly uplifting one another.
Tiffany Haddish’s Eritrean Gown
Tiffany Haddish was ready for the Oscars red carpet. In an interview with Michael Strahan, the Girls Trip star shared that her attire for the evening was a tribute to her late father. He said that one day I would end up here, and if I ever end up at the Oscar to honor my people,” Haddish said. Her father was from Eritrea, so Haddish donned a traditional Eritrean gown for the special occasion.
Kobe Bryant’s Speech
Five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant has another trophy to add to his collection. The future Hall of Famer snagged an Academy Award for Dear Basketball, in the Best Animated Short category. During his acceptance speech, Bryant fired back at Fox News’ Laura Ingraham who encouraged LeBron James and other NBA players to just “shut up and dribble” when it comes to political discussions. “I don’t know if it’s possible, as basketball players we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble,” Bryant said. “I’m glad we do a little bit more than that. Thank you, Academy, for this amazing honor,” said Bryant.
Jordan Peele and Daniel Kaluuya’s Hug
Apparently, Daniel Kaluuya is just really good at hugging. He gave his fellow Black Panther co-star ladies a gentle group hug on the red carpet and then gave Jordan Peele the universal “Black man” hug as Peele made his way to the stage to grab his Best Original Screenplay Oscar.
Lupita Nyongo’s Motherland Red Carpet Do
Lupita Nyong’o is a proud Kenyan, but she is also not afraid to represent from other countries and culture in Africa as well. The Black Panther beauty hit the red carpet with an elegant updo woven with golden thread. The daring coif was inspired by Rwandan culture, specifically the Amasunzu.
Lakeith Stanfield’s Live Tweets
Atlanta star LaKeith Stanfield stole the show early on with a skit alluding to his Get Out character’s famous line. But Stanfield wasn’t just performing on stage, he took to Twitter to give fans a hilarious play-by-play of his night and was happening backstage during the big night. He even made fun of his own outfit. It was kind of like having your play cousin at the Oscars giving you all the funny bits.
