Actress Jill Marie Jones, who won our hearts as Toni on the hit series “Girlfriends” sat down with theGrio to dish on her new show “Monogamy” and talk about her personal journey with love, life and dating.
Over the years, Jones reveals that she has shifted her focus from the physical to really getting to know people in the dating process—and sex doesn’t fit into the equation.
“I’m dating. I’m really dating and sex is not on the table. So, I’m really getting to know, people. And it’s been lovely,” Jones told theGrio.
“By the way I’m no prude at al, but I do think that sex comes really quickly in this day and age in a relationship,” she explains.
“I think it clouds how you actually see that person. Just like Maya Angelou said, when someone shows you who they really are, believe them the first time. Well sometimes, sex clouds what you actually see. And I think if you just take the time to get to know that person, I think that that’s beneficial.”
Jones also explained that after a series of back-to-back long-term relationships, she wanted to focus on getting to know herself—which includes taking herself on dates too.

“Yeah, after my last boyfriend, and we were together for three years, and I realized I was doing this pattern… maybe I was a serial monogamist because I was going from relationship to relationship, but I took sabbatical for like a year and a half, and it’s amazing how clearly you hear when sex isn’t involved.”
Jones, 43, is starring in a new series on UMC called “Monogamy” which follows the lives of four couples who join a “swap therapy” experiment in an effort to save their relationships.
The series premieres on Friday, May 4 on UMC TV (www.UMC.tv) and also stars Vanessa Simmons (Growing Up Hip Hop), Brian White (Ray Donovan, Scandal) and Blue Kimble (Media, Being Mary Jane).
