Here’s why Tyler Perry declined directing gigs with Marvel and DC Comics
Guess the superhero world isn't for everyone.
Tyler Perry is known for making movies and television shows that Black folks love, which is likely a big reason why the actor/producer/writer/director has been approached by Marvel and DC Comics to helm some of their upcoming projects.
While some folks would leap at the change to get in on the superhero craze that has swept the nation since Black Panther, it turns out Perry passed on the projects.
During a recent interview with Screen Rant, he reveals his reasons for declining the opportunities.
“I’ve had a couple conversations, but I would always say, ‘I’m not the guy to do this’. I’m not the guy that can bring this vision to life cause it takes such a village to pull it together, and I’m not a guy that can work with fifty other directors and producers telling you what to do, how to do it,when to do it,” he said. “That doesn’t work for me. I saw that in a couple of the sci-fi movies that I’ve been a part of and I think, ‘Uhh, I’m not doing that.’”

Meanwhile, other Black content creators have taken the super hero world by storm. Cheo Coker has a hit on his hands with Luke Cage and Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil are hard at work on the second season of their CW series, Black Lightning. Gina Prince-Bythewood got in on the action when she directed the series premiere of Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger (also picked up for a second season) and that’s just the beginning of what’s to come.
While the realm is not for everyone, we’re glad that the genre has finally been opened up to creators of color and we can’t wait for what’s next.
