New trailer for ‘Aladdin’ shows Will Smith rockin’ the Genie role, blue skin and all

It's a live action remake, but Will Smith will still be his normal animated self when Disney's all-new "Aladdin" premieres. Take a look at the latest trailer

We are here for a ‘whole new world’ – one in which Will Smith plays a sage (and comical) genie who sings and flies about on a magical carpet.

On Tuesday, Disney released an official trailer for its new, animated Aladdin movie, starring Smith, and the first full look at the remake left us staring at the TV in awe and even singing some of our favorites from the classic film. Snippets from songs like “A Whole New World,” which was sung by stars in the cast — Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine – were included in the trailer.

This live-action remake also features Marwan Kenzari as Jafar and Nasim Pedrad playing a new character named Dalia.

In the film’s first, full-length trailer, we see Aladdin steal the magic lamp from the Cave of Wonders that prompted a visit from Smith’s bespectacled Genie character, who granted the young man his wish of becoming a prince – so he could catch the eye and affection of Princess Jasmine.

But true to his funny and offbeat nature, Smith makes the Genie character all his own. He gets Aladdin to talk to Jasmine and the two ultimately set off on an adventure on the magic carpet.

Playing the Genie, Smith has huge shoes to fill. The late Robin Williams was the voice for the original Genie when animated “Aladdin” came out in 1992. The remake is directed by Guy Ritchie, who directed Sherlock Holmes. Aladdin takes place in the made up city of Agrabah, which Ritchie created from influences in the Middle East and Asia (India and China).

Aladdin hits theaters on May 24.
