According to CBS2, police announced an investigation into the death. In the inquiry, investigators found the child lived on the 20th floor of an apartment complex where his body was found and likely fell to his death from the balcony.

Still, CBS said authorities are continuing to clarify the mystery around the death. Sources informed the news outlet that the boy’s mother and sister were both inside the NYC apartment at the time. The family members told the police officers they believed the teenager was on the balcony completing homework, CBS reported.

Police said they are unsure of whether or not the teenager fell from the terrace or intentionally jumped.

Neighbors said the whole ordeal is a tragedy. While the police confirmed an investigation to the news outlet, they do not believe foul play was involved. Law enforcement however, has not ruled out a death by suicide.

“I don’t think there are any words. It’s bad,” said one unidentified resident to CBS.

Mary Smith, another neighbor questioned how the boy was able to slip due to the structure of the building.

“He’s very young, but it doesn’t matter. I mean, it’s just a tragedy. But I’m wondering how he fell because our terraces are high,” she said to the news outlet.
