Mississippi judge killed, son fatally shot by police
The body of Judge Sheila Jackson Osgood was found by officers who killed her son.
A Mississippi judge has been killed, and her son, a possible suspect in her death, was shot dead by police.
The body of Jackson County Justice Court Judge Sheila Jackson Osgood was found in her home on Wednesday.
Officers in the city of Moss Point were called to perform a welfare check there that morning but said they “were unsuccessful.”
According to a local report, police got a call to return to the home an hour later, this time for a disturbance.

When they arrived back, officers say they heard gunshots and saw 45-year-old Gregory Jackson Jr. charging toward them with a knife.
In a press release posted to its Facebook page, the Moss Point Police Department contends that Jackson “refused several commands to drop his weapon and continued to advance on officers. His actions caused the responding officers to discharge their firearms, fatally wounding the suspect.”

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are conducting an independent probe of the incident.
Moss Point police asked for “patience and cooperation from the community” during the investigation process.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine Osgood’s cause of death, however, in their statement, police said that she appeared to be the victim of a homicide.
Osgood and Jackson lived together on the property. As of press time, police have not released a suspected motive in her killing.
Per department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

According to her Facebook page, Osgood had over 30 years of experience in the legal profession. The judge was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church and the Gulf Coast Missionary Baptist State Convention.
Her bio, written during her 2018 election campaign, says that she and her husband, Mr. Archie Osgood, had 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
