Marc Lamont Hill on tight presidential race: ‘If racism isn’t a deal-breaker for you, you are indeed racist’
'The lie of America is that anybody can just make it with hard work when in fact, their labor is being exploited,' the author says
It’s the day after the 2020 election and America is still waiting to see who will be the next president. The race between President Donald Trump (R) and presidential candidate Joe Biden (D) is very close.
According to NPR, Biden is currently leading with 248 electoral votes, compared to Trump’s 214. A total of 270 electoral votes is needed to become president.
The following states are still counting votes: Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

In Marc Lamont Hill‘s latest opinion video, he discusses how Trump winning many states tells you everything you need to know about America.
“After four years of lies, four years of mismanagement, four years of incivility, four years of anti-Semitism, four years of anti-Black racism, four years of economic decline for the vulnerable—and after a year where 200,000-plus people have died of COVID, people still went in the booth and pulled the lever for Trump,” says Hill.
The professor and author also argued that if anti-semitism, white supremacy and white nationalism aren’t big enough reasons for you to vote against Trump, even if you don’t identify as those things, you still are racist.
If racism isn’t a deal breaker to you, then you are indeed racist.
“White workers in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania were uncertain who to vote for,” says Hill. “Latino communities have been stigmatized by Trump, voted for Trump because they also buy into the lie of America. The lie of America is that this is a country that is as good as its promised on paper.”

Hill continues: “It has never been. Not for Black folk, not for brown folk, not for women, not for poor folk, not for immigrants who don’t look a certain way. The lie of America is that anybody can just make it with hard work when in fact, their labor is being exploited. People keep buying into the lie, and white people every single time will close ranks around whiteness rather than their own well-being.”
Hill concludes that white people will vote for Donald Trump to feel good about being white, even if it means they lose their houses, even if it means dying from COVID.
