Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent joining forces for ABC comedy ‘Family Affair’

Blige and the hip-hop mogul will collaborate on a new project after working together on the 'Power' franchise

It looks like Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent will be collaborating on another project, this time, a comedy series in development at ABC.

Both superstars are already part of the STARZ Power franchise, with MJB starring in Power Book 2: Ghost and Fiddy, (aka Curtis Jackson) working as an executive producer on the spinoff.

Now, they’re teaming up for a single-camera comedy called Family Affair.

The project centers on a washed-up R&B star named A-Ron, whose life is thrown into a tailspin when he’s saddled with raising his sister’s four kids. A-ron is overwhelmed and underwater until he discovers that musical talent runs in the family.

Ranada Shepard and Devon Shepard are set to write and executive produce and 50 Cent will produce under his G-Unit banner.

Blige is also an executive producer under her Blue Butterfly Productions banner, alongside Bruce Miller. David Blackman and Daniel Inkeles are also EP’ing with Universal Music’s film and TV division, Polygram.

Mary J Blige’s Blue Butterfly production company already has a first-look TV deal with Lionsgate and already saw success with its latest release, The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel on Lifetime.

The Grammy-winning singer has crossed over from music to become Hollywood royalty after showing off her acting chops and earning two Oscar nods for her work in Mudbound in 2017. She became the first person to ever be nominated for both the acting and song category for the same movie as both a Best Supporting Actress and Best Song nominee for the film.

“I didn’t anticipate any of this,” Blige told Deadline in 2018. “I just knew I was part of a very powerful, important film, and I was happy to be a part of it.

Since then, she has scored several starring roles in film and television and is currently heating up the small screen in Power Book 2: Ghost. She’s recently starred alongside Anika Noni Rose and Nat Wolff in the horror flick, Body Cam.

Despite her impressive resume, Family Affair would be the first time we see her taking on comedy in a real way , so it should be interesting to see how it plays out.
