Melissa McCarthy’s new film, Tammy, opened last week, raking in an estimated $21.2 million over the July Fourth weekend.

The turnout was less than anticipated; however, this year was the weakest Fourth of July box office results in a decade, according to the New York Times.

The Warner Bros. film has made roughly $39.4 million domestically as of Tuesday since its July 2 opening.

The film’s star, Melissa McCarthy, sat down with theGrio.com to discuss the all-star cast.

When asked if she originally had Susan Sarandon in mind to play the role of her adventurous grandmother, McCarthy said everyone who was asked to join the film did.

McCarthy’s husband and fellow comedian, Ben Falcone, made his directorial debut with Tammy, and the two wrote the screenplay together.

After Falcone said he’d like to work with funny man Kevin Hart, it was only right to ask comedy’s “it girl” if she would be interested.

“I’m not opposed,” she said laughing.
