It’s my baby: Woman stabs pregnant friend, cuts child from womb

Saturday, a Bronx woman who stabbed her pregnant friend to death told authorities that she did so in self defense.

Saturday, a Bronx woman who stabbed her pregnant friend to death told authorities that she did so in self defense.

Following the gruesome attack, police discovered Ashleigh Wade, 22, sitting on the stoop of her building, her hands dripping with blood. She admitted she’d stabbed her friend Angelikque Sutton “as many times as she could,” a police source said.

Wade’s apartment was covered in blood. Sutton had been stabbed repeatedly in the neck and body and had a deep gash across her stomach. A baby’s placenta was found on the bathroom floor with a bloody knife lying nearby.

Both the stabbing victim and her child were rushed to Montefiore Medical Center, where Sutton, 22, died a little after 3:30 p.m.

At first, Wade tried to convince authorities that she had given birth to the child herself. Later, she admitted that the child belonged to her pregnant victim, who she claims attacked her while in her home.

Wade alleges Sutton lunged at her with a knife, but she wrangled it away and jammed it into the woman’s neck. She then proceeded to cut open Sutton’s stomach.

“She said she wanted to save the baby,” a police source revealed.

Wade, who is undergoing psychiatric evaluation, was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

The Facebook page of her boyfriend, Angel Praylow, 27, who walked in on the bloody scene, shows that Wade was obsessed with babies. She had registered for gifts at Babies “R” Us, claiming a due date of Nov. 16. Her partner had also been posting pictures of baby clothes and sonograms in recent months to substantiate her claims.

Police said they couldn’t confirm if Wade is pregnant or has ever been pregnant, because she refused to consent to a medical exam. Her estranged family says in the past she claimed to have had a baby who died. However, she never revealed what hospital she was admitted to or any details to prove it ever happened.

“She was very quiet,” Taneka S., 33, said of Wade. “It’s just sad. The situation is very sad. Young girls, whole life in front of them.”

“She probably was pregnant in the beginning and lost the baby,” said Wade’s landlord, Angela Parris. “She had me fooled terribly.”

Sutton’s grief-stricken family declined to comment on their loss. The two woman met in fifth grade, lost touch, then rekindled their friendship recently on Facebook. In the days leading up to the murder, they had dinner and even went shopping for baby items together.

After killing her friend, Wade called her boyfriend and told him to come over “because she did something really bad.” When police arrived, they found the young man standing outside with two friends, holding the child swaddled in a jacket.

“No one deserves to die like that, have your baby cut out of you,” said Sutton’s neighbor, Cheryl Wilson.

Many are speculating that Wade’s fixation with having a child played a major role in Sutton’s death.
