The President of Bel-Air?

No, it’s not an upcoming Fresh Prince TV spin-off, but maybe it could be.

Will Smith told The Hollywood Reporter this week that there maybe a future for him in politics. The interview was part of the magazine’s “Awards Chatter” podcast. The 45-minute interview covered the movie star’s incredible rise to fame from West Philadelphia, his staggering music and movie career and his current film project Concusssion.

THR’s Scott Feinberg writes that Smith is far from “content” about the current “state of affairs” in America. Feinberg admits he was caught off-guard when Smith elaborated, explaining a future for him in politics is not off the table:

I’m a climber, so if I see a mountain, I have to climb it. I’m not a camper; I don’t like hanging in one place too long. So I think, at this point, I’m elevating my ability to be useful in the world. I think that that’s what my grandmother always hoped, that I would make myself useful to people in this lifetime. I’m working really hard and my storytelling is elevating, my ability to be eloquent with my body and with my voice and to deliver ideas as an actor is elevating. And, you know, as I look at the political landscape, I think that there might be a future out there for me. They might need me out there. This is the first year that I’ve been incensed to a level that I can’t sleep, you know? So I’m feeling that at some point, in the near future, I will have to lend my voice to the conversation in a somewhat different way.

How could Smith lend his voice to the political conversation? Who knows.

He is undoubtedly near the top — if not at thee top — of the list of Hollywood’s leading actors and celebrities. He’s an internationally known music and film icon.

Smith has expressed in several interviews in the past his desire to portray Obama in a biopic. The president also picked Smith as his choice to portray him because of the pair’s similarly shaped ears.

Remember, Smith and his wife Jada-Pinkett Smith interviewed President Obama shortly after he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in December, 2009.
