Airline CEO attacked with cream pie during speech

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Alan Joyce, the CEO of Australian airline company Qantas, was giving a speech at the Hyatt Regency hotel for The West Australian newspaper’s “Leadership Matters” breakfast when he was attacked with a cream pie.

Joyce had just taken the stage when a man in a suit walked up to him and shoved the pie in his face before quickly being seized by security guards. It was not immediately clear what his motive was, and it is not clear whether the man will be charged.

Joyce was able to recover from the incident and went on to give his speech after he got himself cleaned up, and he described the moment afterward as a “new experience.”

Asked if he knew what flavor the pie was, he admitted that he didn’t actually know.

“I didn’t have a chance to test it, it was mostly on my glasses,” he said. “I think my issue is I need a good dry cleaner before I leave Perth.”

The newspaper, which runs the event, has since apologized for the “regrettable incident” but continued on to praise Joyce for “his presence of mind and the professional manner in which he managed the situation.”
