Internet confused by photo of Klansman with locs at KKK rally

On Saturday, 50 members of the Ku Klux Klan clashed with about 1,000 counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, but one photo in particular from the rally has been throwing the internet into total confusion.

Twitter user DeVante Cunningham posted the image on Saturday night of the unidentified man who came to the rally that was held by the North Carolina-based Loyal White Knights, who were trying to stop the city from removing a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

But it was this man’s hairstyle that gave Cunningham pause and prompted hi to take the picture and post it on Twitter, along with the completely confused caption, “A klansman with dreadlocks y’all…A KLANSMAN WITH DREADLOCKS.”

Cunningham later told the BBC that he and his friend, who had come to the rally to protest against the KKK, were in “total disbelief” when the saw the mean in locs.

“We’re looking at the KKK here, and dreadlocks are basically a symbol of African culture. It was really weird to see,” he said.

The tweet has since taken off, with many people commenting echoing Cunningham’s disbelief, though a few have claimed that the hairstyle does not “belong” to any one culture. Still, the overall reaction was one of shock. It’s a visual that just doesn’t fit, and the internet reacted accordingly.
