A school resource officer tasered a Lehigh Acres, Florida middle school student during a fight on school grounds on Monday.
Authorities say the fight started when 14-year-old De’Coria Brown of Lehigh Acres shoved another girl as students were being released from school.
Detectives say the two began punching and pulling each other’s hair before staff members and a deputy broke up the fight. According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report, a school administrator restrained Brown.
That’s when authorities say Brown elbowed the school employee in the face and charged back at the resource officer and the other student.
Another school employee tried to stop Brown, but detectives say Brown grabbed the staff member and pushed her aside. The deputy then told the teen to stop, but the orders were ignored, according to the report.
“As [Brown] got closer, within just a few feet, [she] began to swing her arms and raise her feet as if she was about to strike towards [the deputy] in attempt to get at the other student,” the report said.
The deputy again told Brown to stay back, but she refused.
”[The deputy], fearing for her own safety and that of the other students in the area, particularly the one she had custody of, was forced to deploy her Taser,” the report said. “The Taser probes struck [Brown] in the torso and brought her to immediate compliance.”
Authorities say the teen was not injured from the incident. Brown was arrested and taken to the Lee County Juvenile Assessment Center.
She was charged with two counts of battery on a school district employee, one count of assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of disruption of a school function.
