Students at a high school in Tempe scrapped a walkout planned Friday morning after their principal changed his mind and agreed to back their application for President Barack Obama to speak at high school graduation.

The Marcos de Niza seniors, who wrote essays and made a video for the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge, said they couldn’t get Principal Frank Mirizio to sign the application.

They said Mirizio told the students he worried about student safety and parent complaints if Obama spoke at high school graduation.
