The White House is gearing up for two major battles over financial reform and President Obama’s next Supreme Court pick.
On Wednesday Mr. Obama said his pick will be pro-choice.
“I want somebody who is going to be interpreting our Constitution in a way that takes into account individual rights, and that includes women’s rights,” he told a bipartisan group of Senators gathered at the White House.
His first nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, was confirmed with nine Republican votes.
Republicans Mitch McConnell and Jeff Sessions voted “no”, but both met Wednesday with the president, who’s hoping to fan this week’s flicker of bipartisanship.
Meanwhile, cross-party cooperation looks possible on new financial regulations.
Both sides have agreed on a main point: No bailouts for firms that have acted recklessly, but house GOP leaders still oppose the overall plan.
