It’s been one year since Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested on the steps of his Cambridge, Massachusetts home. His accusations of racial profiling set off a firestorm of debate about issues of race, class and policing nationwide.

President Obama first said the arresting officer, Sergeant James Crowley “acting stupidly” — but then called the incident a “teachable moment” for America.

Some have said the incident changed Obama’s standing with white voters in America.
