Kony 2012: Senate pushes measure condemning Joseph Kony

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bipartisan group of 34 senators has introduced a resolution condemning a ruthless guerrilla group accused of widespread atrocities in Africa and its leader, Joseph Kony.

The measure backs the effort of African nations to end the threat posed by the Lord’s Resistance Army and the attempt by the United States to help regional forces pursuing him and his forces. In October, President Barack Obama sent about 100 U.S. troops — mostly Army Special Forces — to central Africa as advisers to regional forces.

The Lord’s Resistance Army has kidnapped thousands of children, forcing them to become sex slaves, fight as soldiers and kill family members during a 26-year campaign of terror.

A widely-seen video by the advocacy group Invisible Children has raised awareness about Kony worldwide.
