President Barack Obama will appear on the cover of the July 2012 issue of Essence magazine, according to a release by the publication. The issue, which hits the stands on June 12, includes an interview in which the president shares his “plan to improve the economy, our health, homes and future — and why he’s excited about the next four years,” the magazine’s release stated.

First lady Michelle Obama also salutes military families in a piece featured in the issue.

“I’ve always approached my presidency as a long-term proposition… I didn’t run for office just to clean up the mess I inherited,” the POTUS tells the black women’s magazine in the cover story titled Looking Forward. “I didn’t run for office just to return to the status quo. Understanding that some of the things I get done, we may not see the benefits from them for ten years. But that’s how change happens…”
