Oprah Winfrey’s talk show Oprah’s Next Chapter recently featured an interview with pop star Rihanna, who got deeply personal as she spoke about her relationship with Chris Brown.
Since their very public break up in 2009, when Brown assaulted her, Rihanna has not shown too much anger and their have been rumors about the couple reconciling.
Rihanna denies being in a romantic relationship with Brown but confesses that they are building a friendship and “still love each other.”
“I think he was the love of my life,” she told Winfrey. “He was the first love and I see that he loved me the same way. We were very young and very spontaneous. We ran free. We ran wild. We were falling in love going in at a really rapid pace and we forgot about ourselves as individuals.”
Allendra Letsome, vice president of the National Organization for Women, spoke with The Today Show about the possible repercussions to the interview.
“There’s always concern with any sort of public relationship. That society will choose to mimic it and believe that it is the archetype for how a relationship will progress,” she said.
“We’re very, very close friends,” Rihanna told Oprah as she tried to hold back tears. “We built a trust again and that’s it. We love each other and we probably always will. And that’s not anything that we’re gonna try to change. It’s not something you can shut off if you’ve ever been in love.”
