President Barack Obama is often chided, especially by pundits and critics on the right, for not doing enough to ingratiate himself with Republicans.

But if a recently shared anecdote from his friend Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) is to be believed, he is being shown an unprecedented level of disrespect for a sitting president by his conservative opponents.

According to Durbin, a Republican House leader, who he hasn’t named, told the president, “I cannot even stand to look at you.”

“Many Republicans searching for something to say in defense of the disastrous shutdown strategy will say President Obama just doesn’t try hard enough to communicate with Republicans,” Durbin said in a Facebook post. “But in a ‘negotiation’ meeting with the president, one GOP House Leader told the president: ‘I cannot even stand to look at you.'”

“What are the chances of an honest conversation with someone who has just said something so disrespectful?” Durbin added.

The Hill reports that an aide to Rep. John Boehner denies any knowledge of this exchange taking place.
